University of Malta – Institute for Tourism, Travel and Culture - Archives Project
During a recent ceremony at the Aula Magnia in Valletta the University of Malta launched the Institute of Tourism, Travel and Culture. The event under the patronage of the Hon. Mario de Marco was addressed also by the Rector Prof. Juanito Camilleri and the Director of the Institute Dr Nadia Theuma. During the same presentation information was given about the archiving of tourism data which has now been going on for more than a year.
Partners: University of Malta, National Archives, Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism, Malta Tourism Authority and Tourism Directorate.
As part of this project, during the last months a number of Tourism students from the University of Malta have been sorting, re-boxing, and cataloguing documents pertaining to the historical development of tourism in Malta from 1958 to 1999 which were recently deposited at the National Archives. The process was complex. The records were stored in a rather bad state of preservation at a basement in St Christopher Street, Valletta. More than four truck loads of records were deposited. The outcome of the project will be exhibited to the public during an exhibition to be held in September 2011.
